Blue1 gets comprehensive grip on outsourcing with Efecte’s solution

The Finland-based IT service provider Efecte has supplied the airline company Blue1 with an ERP for IT solution, providing Blue1 with the tools for managing its IT property and monitoring its outsourced services. The system was implemented in January 2008.
 
“Efecte helped us document the entire IT operating environment. This allows us to communicate with the rest of the organisation more easily, especially in situations of change. For example, when a new staff member joins the company, all of the necessary information is fed into the Efecte system, which launches the respective processes, including everything from new email passwords to computers and cell phone accounts”, Petri Laine, Head of Information Management at Blue1 comments on the new solution.
 
Blue1’s information management introduced ITIL compatible procedures two years ago. At that time, the decision still envisaged the implementation of an ERP for IT solution designed in-house, only to realise later that the company simply did not have the time and resources to develop the system further.
 
Last summer, Blue1 opted for the ready-made solution provided by Efecte. According to Petri Laine of Blue1, Efecte’s renown and good reputation as well as its sound track record in providing ready-made solutions supplied to other organisations were decisive factors in the decision. Efecte’s centralised ERP for IT solution comprises a Service Desk for the instruction, guidance and development of the support services, a Knowledge Base solution databank as well as a CMDB data base for the management and modelling of IT data.
 
“The core objective was related to the documentation of Blue1’s IT property. In the future, we will be perfectly aware of all the equipment licences in use in the organisation and will thus be able to anticipate any updating requirements. The Efecte system has enabled us to achieve significant cost savings in IT property management. In addition, by using Efecte we can also evaluate the level of outsourced services and compare suppliers”, Petri Laine adds.
 
Blue1 also has some in-house systems, but the majority of the company’s IT functions are outsourced to various service providers. The company’s own IT management caters for the more challenging requests for support, equipment procurements, outsourcing management and the respective service level measurements. In addition, changes are managed internally.
 
“Blue1 is a good example of a multi-supplier environment with a small in-house information management organisation and most of its services outsourced. Rational outsourcing calls for carefully defined service levels, with the opportunity to compare and monitor operating costs. The introduction of the CMDB and Service Desk applications is the first step towards a versatile and comprehensive ERP for IT solution”, Director Juha Berghäll of Efecte comments on the Blue1 project.
 
An SAS Group company, Blue1 is Finland’s second largest airline, carrying around 1.8 million passengers annually to 23 Finnish, Scandinavian and European destinations. With a staff of about 550 people, the company headquarters are located in Helsinki/Vantaa. The number of workstations in use is 350. Its Finland-based information management function employs less than 10 people.
