Cloud Computing Is a Game Changer (part 1)
You’ve heard this before: a new technology that’s going to revolutionize everything. The same has been said about xSP, SOA, SaaS and a dozen other acronyms that were hyped until the next big thing came along. Except that this time I have reason to believe it’s true: cloud computing is going to revolutionize the way we create, deliver and purchase software.
Clouds build upon earlier developments in IT: internet, virtualization, mobility, xSP models, SOA and SaaS. All these were needed to create
- a technological environment that scales and is available to everyone
- business models where software is purchased and used as a service
- a basis for massively scalable internet services where both using the service and developing the service requires only moderate initial investments
Concrete examples of how things will change:
- You can use your daily office tools like email, word processing, presentations etc. over the net using a browser or some other standard client. No local installations of software and servers are needed.
- You can use most of your business applications like CRMs, intranets, project management etc. over the net as well. Subscribe to the service and pay a recurring subscription fee based on usage or amount of users.
- Access all these services using mobile devices. This will increase the value of these services in your daily work.
- IT becomes a true service management office where it maps the needs of the business to available services, coordinates integration of these services and manages supplier relationships.
Ok. Here’s the revolution but where’s the definition? Read my next blog in a few weeks.
